KATHUA, AUGUST 20: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kathua today organized a one-day training programme on “Improved Production and Management Practices in Oilseed Crops” under Cluster Frontline Demonstrations (CFLDs) allotted by ICAR-ATARI, Ludhiana. The programme aimed at promoting diversification and enhancing oilseed productivity in the district.

The training was conducted under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) and under the dynamic leadership of Dr. B.N. Tripathi, Vice Chancellor, and guidance of Dr. Amrish Vaid, Director Extension, SKUAST-J.

More than 50 farmers and farm women from different areas of Kathua district participated in the programme.
Chief Scientist & Head, KVK Dr. Vishal Mahajan inaugurated the programme and welcomed the participants. He underlined the importance of oilseed crops in ensuring nutritional security and reducing dependency on imports.

He further emphasized adoption of scientific practices and optimum utilization of government schemes for boosting oilseed production.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Scientist (Agricultural Extension) Dr. Berjesh Ajrawat highlighted the need for attaining self-reliance in edible oil production. He observed that despite being one of the largest consumers, India continues to import a significant quantity of edible oils, putting a burden on the national economy. He called upon farmers to expand oilseed cultivation and adopt technologies like use of certified seeds, integrated pest management, cluster-based approach and value addition for better profitability. He also apprised participants about various schemes including National Food Security Mission (Oilseeds) and National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO).

The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Dr. Ajay Kumar while Vijay Singh, Amit Kumar, Raj Kumar, Rishav Sharma and other members of KVK Kathua extended support in smooth conduct of the event.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation of farmers, including a large number of farm women, who actively interacted with scientists and shared field-level issues. The participants urged the organizers to conduct similar training programmes in other parts of the district.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Sushant Sharma.
