No end to power crisis in Kangan areas of Ganderbal; students worst sufferers

Ganderbal: There seems to be no end to the power crisis which keeps worsening in the Kangan area in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

Complaints keep pouring in from various areas of the district, including Kangan, Prang, Chinnar, Kijpora, Gujarpati, and Prang that the Power Development Department (PDD) is resorting to frequent power cuts.

Residents of these areas, while talking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), said their respective neighborhoods continue to reel under darkness, especially during the wee hours. “The bone-chilling cold, along with the power cuts, is suffocating,” they said.

The residents said their children, who are appearing in examinations, are the worst sufferers.

“What is the point of having three power projects in the district? Why don’t we receive an uninterrupted power supply if we pay bills on time?” locals told KNO.

“Our children are unable to study properly in the absence of power,” said the residents of Prang. “It’s unfortunate that the authorities resort to unscheduled power cuts in the morning and evening hours, which are the ideal times to study,” they added.

Many students complained that the power cuts were badly affecting their studies. “How can we study in the absence of electricity? Instead of resorting to power cuts, the PDD should ensure uninterrupted power supply during this examination season,” they said. The students demanded that the PDD should ensure an uninterrupted power supply.

When contacted, AEE Kangan assured that the matter will be resolved as soon as possible—(KNO)
