OIC’s Kashmir References: What is the Role?

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) recent and regular intervention in domestic Indian affairs has always been met with ridicule . The OIC, an international organisation of Muslim countries, has made inappropriate references to India that are factually erroneous, particularly its pronouncements regarding J&K at the behest and push of Pakistan, which is undergoing several crises and has failed to put its house in order. The OIC has made assertions regarding Kashmir, referring to it as “occupied,” that are not supported by a legal or factual basis. It has often referred to Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as disputed areas, despite the fact that they are an integral and inalienable part of India. The OIC has decided to live in the past because the present and future of world politics do not allow for it.

Even though India has consistently said that the entire area of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh is an integral and inalienable part of India, the platform has always sided with the unjustifiable and biased attitude that it has been pursuing. That is a position that is not only unreasonable but also violates all international laws and norms. Not only that, but the OIC has been attempting to internationalise the issues of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, despite India’s consistent assertion that these are matters of internal concern and that any outside meddling will not be permitted.

When it comes to Kashmir, the OIC position is completely disregarding India’s sovereignty and the wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and there are practically no takers for it. It’s making a joke of itself! The fact remains that, in continuing its approach to the matter, the OIC has emerged as a platform riddled with biases and siding with narratives that lack the necessary bases. It has not only made unjustified references to India but has also manipulated facts to suit its goal, further eroding its credibility—and has now come down hard on ground.

Rather than exaggerating the Kashmir issue and producing unnecessary and unjustifiable pronouncements, coupled with an obviously political and factually inaccurate approach, it has to change its ways: Understand that it is not taken seriously, that there are no takers on Kashmir, to say the least. It is past time for the OIC to abstain from making unjustified references to India and its internal affairs—not on its own, and not at the behest of a country like Pakistan, which has a tendency of disregarding the plight of its people and instead digging up issues with which it has no concern. The OIC must recognise that it has no role to play when it comes to J&K. The sooner it realises this, the better.
