One Nation, One Election Debate: Mir terms it ‘impractical’

Srinagar, Dec 13 : All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary and senior J&K Congress leader, Ghulam Ahmad Mir, on Friday criticized the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, calling it ‘impractical’ and ‘beyond imagination.’

Mir accused the BJP-led central government of using such proposals to divert attention from pressing governance issues, including unemployment and economic challenges.

Speaking in South Kashmir, Mir, as per the news agency stated, “India is a vast and complex country with a democratic framework. Holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, panchayats, and municipalities seems beyond imagination.”

He further said that the proposal would be discussed in Parliament, where all political parties could express their views. However, he added that the country is currently not advanced enough to conduct all elections simultaneously.

“This government often introduces such debates to cover up its governance failures. Issues like unemployment, development, and public welfare are being sidelined. The focus should be on solving fundamental problems rather than proposing ideas that seem impractical,” he said.

Notably, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recently approved a constitutional amendment bill to facilitate simultaneous elections. The move has sparked widespread debate among political leaders, with Parliament set to deliberate on the matter
