KUPWARA, JULY 31: An outreach visit for a team of Legal Aid Defense Counsels (LADCs) of Bandipora was today conducted to the District Jail Kupwara.
This initiative was effectively overseen by Khalil Ahmad Choudhary, Chairman, DLSA (Pr. District & Sessions Judge) Bandipora, and organsied under the guidance of Sheikh Babar Hussain, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Bandipora.
The purpose of the visit was to hold interaction with the jail inmates, assess their access to legal representation, and understand any concerns or issues they might be facing inside the jail premises.
During the visit, it was observed that the total number of inmates presently lodged in District Jail Kupwara exceeded the sanctioned capacity, highlighting a significant issue of overcrowding.
Among the incarcerated individuals, 21 inmates are residents of District Bandipora. The remaining inmates are lodged in connection with various First Information Reports (FIRs), pending investigation or trial under applicable legal provisions.
The visiting team ensured that the legal and constitutional rights of all inmates are being safeguarded. Attention was also given to the status of legal aid, and the team documented the individual legal aid requirements of eligible inmates.
Necessary instructions have been issued for appropriate follow-up action through the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) and other concerned agencies. The authorities have been advised to take note of the overcrowding situation and to initiate appropriate remedial measures in accordance with established norms and guidelines.
The visit was facilitated by the superintendent of District Jail, along with his team, who was present throughout the interaction.
The visiting team of LADCs comprised members including Bilal Ahmad Bhat, Chief LADC Bandipora; Iqbal Rubbani Bhat, Deputy LADC; Toiba Tabasum, Deputy LADC; Wani Nawaz ul Haq, Assistant LADC; Javaid Iqbal, Assistant LADC, and Tariq Ahmad, PLV DLSA Bandipora.
This visit reflects the unwavering commitment of the Legal Services Authorities towards ensuring justice, equity, and legal aid access for all, particularly for those behind bars.
