Sopore, Aug 19 : In a significant move aimed at easing the financial strain on families and fostering social equality, Auqaf committees across Sopore town in north Kashmir have come together to change the traditional marriage customs by advocating for simple weddings.

The initiative taken by the coordination committee of Krankshivan Colony, comprising at least 10 mohallas came in light of growing concerns about the escalating costs associated with extravagant marriages.

Ghulam Nabi Sheikh, Chairman Coordination Committee told the news agency that the joint decision was taken during a meeting in which the rise of lavish weddings deviating from religious and cultural values was discussed.

“We have collectively decided to simplify the Wazwaan menu and keep it modest, in essence to ensure weddings reflect religious teachings and traditions,” he said.

Sheikh said that the initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on families and promote timely marriages, particularly among those struggling with the costs of traditional wedding ceremonies.

“The most blessed Nikkah is the one with the least expenses. The extravagance in weddings is discouraged in Islam as it leads to wastage and inequality,” he said.

He said that they have jointly decided to limit the number of dishes in the traditional wazwan, cutting down on excessive gift-giving, and rethinking elaborate Phirsaals.

Mohammad Lateef, one of the Auqaf head while commending the initiative said that it will promote a sense of fairness, solidarity and community spirit.
