SWD Srinagar holds Awareness Programme on PC&PNDT Act for Teachers

SRINAGAR, JULY 21: Social Welfare Department (SWD), SANKALP-HEW, Srinagar organized a one-day awareness programme on Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PC&PNDT Act) for teachers of Government and Private educational institutions.

The programme, held at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Kothi Bagh, Srinagar, was aimed at sensitizing teachers about the objectives and provisions of the PC&PNDT Act and highlighting their vital role in promoting gender equality, protecting the rights of the girl child, and creating awareness against sex selection and female foeticide. As educators and opinion leaders, teachers were encouraged to foster positive social attitudes towards the girl child and disseminate awareness among students, parents, and the community.
Resource persons from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Srinagar, and the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Office, Srinagar, delivered informative sessions on the legal, medical, and social dimensions of the PC&PNDT Act.

They elaborated on the objectives of the Act, its key provisions, the legal consequences of violations, and the collective responsibility of society in preventing gender-biased sex selection. The speakers also emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts by educational institutions, government departments, and the community to safeguard the rights and dignity of the girl child.

The programme witnessed active participation from teachers representing Government and Private schools, who engaged in interactive discussions and reaffirmed their commitment to spreading awareness through school-based activities and community outreach initiatives.

Speaking on the occasion, Staff of SANKALP-HEW Srinagar reiterated that awareness and education are essential tools in addressing gender discrimination and ensuring the effective implementation of the PC&PNDT Act. The Department of Social Welfare, Srinagar, remains committed to organizing such awareness and capacity-building programmes to promote gender justice and uphold the rights of women and girls.
