Even today, the Trump supporters as well as Trump himself are alleging that he was illegally denied re-election and that the system as well as the electoral process was tweaked to ensure Joe Biden rose to power. These allegations only belong to third-world countries, where those in power when dethroned, accuse the mismanagement. But that cannot be true of the US which has been a role model for the democracies across the world, however, Trumpism is now directly threatening the entire setup in the US while it looks into the eye of those in power, challenging their stake and impressing on course correction—all this comes at the cost of something unique and precious: the democratic values.
Currently, Trump along with his supporters are taking throwing the fundamentals of democracy to the wind and are belittling the system which, they believe requires changes: the changes that suit them, which paves a way for autocratic rule, kicking the democracy out of the room—that’s what these elements in the US are aiming for as kicking the democracy around is something that we saw at the Capitol Hill earlier.
Whatever is happening in the US, it has a great lesson for the thriving democracies elsewhere. Countries where democracy is the driving force, need to understand that those in power cannot be trusted; they would, while in power, try to tweak the system as per the convenience, something that would suit them, paving a way for them to keep what they have, forever.
What governs the entire system, those in power would ensure that that force remains caged and one fine day people would wake up to something new, something they never wanted—something that would be scary. What might be waiting ahead and to bypass that, there is a need for making the foundations of the book, which governs the functioning of the system, strong enough so that nobody is ever able to tweak around, do it his way. Trumpism is a great danger to democracy and it is a wake-up call for those who have sacrificed a lot for what they have today, like India.
