The United Nations, even though it is the highest body in the world, with the representation of all the countries to ensure that there is peace, security and stability across the world. It also was created to ensure, post-world war II that counties do not attack each other—basically, the motive was to protect countries, their people from external threats. However, as we look at the present global landscape, what galore is the inaction, the inertness of the United Nations which is providing a free hand to the world powers do run the global affairs as they deem fit. While the United Nations should have been the body to have total control of what happens globally, it seems dull, lazy and overpowered.
What is happening in Ukraine has brought to the fore that the forums like United Nations cannot do much, rather, it must be said that they cannot do anything to avert the crises that have now engulfed Ukraine. It was quite visible to the world when the same forum failed to play a decisive role in dousing down the conflicts that raged in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Myanmar and many others.
However, the world did not talk about it then, because there were interests that were to be taken care of. The United Nations kept mum, acted as a mute spectator, did nothing even as thousands of lives were lost in the deadliest conflicts ever witnessed.
Now, when Russia is wreaking havoc across Ukraine, bombing hospitals, maternity care centres, the world is no matter registering its protests, condemnations, but the United Nations has even after that failed to act, crack whip on the violators of human rights and act against them in the International Court of Justice. Since its formation back in 1945, the forum has done almost nothing in preventing conflicts, addressing the issues aimed at conflict resolution, rather it has largely served the interests of the countries that are having a say, globally and have got an impact on global politics.
When the world is perhaps on the brink of another world war, there is again a need of having a powerful forum being felt all over, however, that cannot be and will not be the United Nations, which has now limited itself to the passing of resolutions that san the ground impact; the countries, powerful ones, continue doing what they want to, side-lining the United Nations. The highest forum can be reactivated, rejuvenated if it starts working without succumbing to any pressure. The United Nations has to play its role in the global landscape, ensure peace and security because it cannot afford to see it being side-lined. It has to stay relevant, important.
