Srinagar, Jan 04 : The much-anticipated Z-Morh Tunnel, a 6.5-kilometre-long strategic route connecting the Srinagar-Leh highway, is awaiting formal approval from New Delhi for public opening. Nearly six months have passed since the tunnel, constructed by APCO Amarnathji Tunnelway Pvt Ltd, achieved its Commercial Operation Date on July 24, 2024.

Despite the completion of the Rs 2,400 crore tunnel, officials revealed to the news agency that they are still waiting for the official green signal to open it to the public.

A source familiar with the project confirmed that the tunnel could be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month, though no official date has been confirmed yet.

“The Z-Morh Tunnel is fully ready for public use, but we are still awaiting formal approval from New Delhi. We hope to receive the go-ahead soon,” an official said.

He said the tunnel has the potential to boost tourism and ease travel hardships. “This tunnel will make our lives much easier, especially during the harsh winters. It’s frustrating that it’s still not open to the public despite being ready for months,” he said, adding, “We hope the government acts quickly, as this is crucial for our local economy and daily commuting.”

The Z-Morh Tunnel, part of a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model, is expected to enhance connectivity between the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg and the rest of Jammu & Kashmir. Located at an altitude of 8,500 feet, the tunnel will provide all-weather access and boost military logistics to Ladakh, a region critical to national security.

The project was first envisioned by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2012, with construction later taken over by the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL). Originally slated for completion in October 2024, the tunnel was recently opened on an emergency basis to clear traffic stranded due to heavy snowfall and slippery road conditions on the highway.

The tunnel is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring safer, year-round connectivity for civilians and military operations alike, eliminating the snow-related challenges that often block the Srinagar-Leh highway
