BIOCME 2025: CME cum Workshop on “Key Laboratory Techniques in Newborn Screening ” held at Biochemistry Department GMC Srinagar

SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 7: A one day CME cum workshop was organized here in GMC Srinagar today which was attended by eminent national and regional experts, faculty members, and young researchers, creating a vibrant platform for academic exchange and skill-building.

During a day-long programme, the participants including clinicians, biochemists, medical lab technologists and researchers gained hands-on training in key laboratory techniques that comprise automated capillary electrophoresis, ELISA, ECLIA and Multimode Reader Assays for metabolic disorders.

This event marks the beginning of the first phase of free screening for pregnant women and newborns, under DBT-GOI funded NIDAN Kendra, established in collaboration with the Departments of Pediatrics and Obstetrics & Gynecology. This initiative aims at detecting inherited metabolic and genetic disorders early.

The workshop was inaugurated by Principal/Dean, GMC Srinagar, Prof. (Dr.) Iffat Hassan Shah, who lauded the department for its pioneering role in translating molecular and genetic technologies into clinical and public health practice. She emphasized the importance of early detection. and intervention in reducing the burden of inherited and metabolic disorders among newborns. She complimented the organizers for their tireless efforts in organizing this event.

Highlighting the objectives of the UMMID Initiative of DBT-GOI, the Coordinator, Prof. (Dr.) Sabhiya Majid, explained that the NIDAN Kendra focuses on diagnosis and care of genetic and metabolic disorders, Screen pregnant women and newborns for inherited diseases and train the clinicians in human genetics and molecular medicine. She noted that congenital and genetic diseases contribute significantly to neonatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in regions with higher consanguinity, such as Kashmir,

On this occasion the speakers of national and international repute including Dr. Priyankal Srivastava, Associate Professor, Genetic Metabolic Unit, department of pediatrics, Advanced Pediatrics center, PGIMER Chandigarh, delivered insightful lectures for enriching the knowledge and information of participants which included some Heads of Departments from various medical Colleges of Kashmir valley.

The event marked yet another milestone for GMC Srinagar in promoting evidence-based medicine, collaboration, and innovation in health research and diagnostics for the benefit of society.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Administrator, Associated hospitals GMC Srinagar, Mohammad Ashraf Hakak; Ex-HOD pediatrics GMC Srinagar, Prof. Muzaffar Jan; EX-HOD biochemistry GMC Srinagar, Prof. Syed Taffazul Hussain; HOD obstetrics & gynecology GMC Srinagar, Prof Syed Masuma Rizvi; HOD ENT, Prof Manzoor Ahmad latoo and Medical Superintendent SMHS hospital., Dr Andleeb Bashir.
