Delimitation report mindful of JK’s geographical parameters: BJP

Srinagar: Amid controversy, Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday claimed that the Delimitation Commission draft has been “chalked out” keeping in mind, “scientific, mathematical and geographical parameters” of Jammu and Kashmir.
BJP leader and spokesperson Altaf Thakur alleged that in the past delimitation was done with an “interest to create their own vote bank.”
“Earlier constituencies had one part in one district and the rest in another, which has been rectified by this commission rightly, so that a constituency remains within the constituency,” Thakur said while addressing media persons in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
He said the present delimitation commission has chalked out boundaries geographically, scientifically and mathematically keeping in view the “Patwari halka” basis.
He said the government has no role to play in the delimitation commission as it is an independent body headed by a Supreme Court judge and there is no attempt at creating a vote bank.
“BJP has always demanded equality among all the constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir”, he said and added “We thank the delimitation commission for drafting the report according to the democratic process so that the development of every part is carried out equally”.
Reacting on the Anantnag constituency in south Kashmir being merged with Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu, he said it would draw a competition among the voters and those who were being elected with 2 percent to 3 percent votes in the past will come to an end.
“The delimitation commission has set right the democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir after 30 years”, Thakur added.
Majority of mainstream political parties in Kashmir have rejected the delimitation draft alleging that it has been done to favour of the ruling BJP.
