BUDGAM, MARCH 25: District Legal Services Authority, Budgam (DLSA Budgam), under the aegis of the J&K Legal Services Authority and under the chairmanship of O. P. Bhagat, Chairman, DLSA (Principal District & Sessions Judge), Budgam, successfully conducted an awareness programme on the NALSA (Legal Services to Persons with Mental Illness and Persons with Intellectual Disabilities) Scheme, 2024, along with awareness on digital frauds and online scams at Al-Asama Educational Institute, Budgam.
The programme was organized with the objective of creating awareness among students and staff regarding the legal rights and entitlements of persons with mental illness and intellectual disabilities, as well as sensitizing them about the increasing risks of digital frauds and the preventive measures to safeguard themselves in the online space.
Tajher Bashir, System Officer, e-Courts Budgam, highlighted various aspects of cybercrimes, including online fraud, hacking, and data breaches. He elaborated on different forms of digital fraud and online scams such as phishing, OTP frauds, and identity theft. He also shared practical measures to ensure safety in the digital environment. Furthermore, he educated the participants about the legal consequences of cybercrimes and provided guidance on how individuals can protect themselves from becoming victims of such offences.
During the programme, the resource person, highlighted the key provisions of the NALSA Scheme, 2024, emphasizing access to free legal aid, protection of rights, and the role of legal services institutions in supporting vulnerable sections of society. During the lecture, the participants were sensitized about the challenges faced by persons suffering from mental illness and intellectual disabilities within the legal system, as well as the importance of providing them with effective legal representation and support.
The participants were also informed about the objectives of the LSUM Scheme, 2024, including the availability of free legal aid, protection of rights, and the role of legal services authorities in ensuring fair and equitable treatment of persons with mental illness and intellectual disabilities. The session further emphasized how mental illness can affect a person’s ability to understand legal proceedings and highlighted the need for specialized legal assistance in such cases.
