SRINAGAR, AUGUST 12: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Srinagar, in its continued endeavour to promote legal literacy and empower young citizens, organized an extensive legal awareness programme in connection with the observance of International Youth Day.
In this connection, two events were held at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Amira Kadal, Srinagar, and Vitasta Law College, Srinagar, with the aim of sensitizing students about vital social and legal issues, equipping them with the knowledge to safeguard their rights, and inspiring them to play a constructive role in society.
The initiative was held under the chairmanship of Tasleem Arief, Chairman (Principal District and Sessions Judge), DLSA Srinagar, and was conducted under the supervision of Sajad Ur Rehman, Sub-Judge and Secretary, DLSA Srinagar.
At Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Amira Kadal, the programme commenced with an interactive session on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Assistant Legal Aid Defence Counsels (LADC), DLSA Srinagar explained the scope, objectives, and safeguards provided under the Act, stressing the importance of awareness in preventing exploitation and ensuring the safety of children. They motivated the students to channel their potential towards positive societal change.
Panel Lawyer, DLSA Srinagar, provided an insightful overview of the Domestic Violence Act (DV Act), underlining its provisions for protection and legal remedies available to victims, while encouraging students to stand against all forms of abuse.
The awareness drive continued at Vitasta Law College, where the focus shifted to equally significant topics. Advocates/ Panel Lawyer captivated the law students with an in-depth presentation on the legal, psychological, and social dimensions of drug abuse. They highlighted the alarming rise in substance abuse among the youth, its legal repercussions, and the urgent need for preventive community action.
Both programmes were marked by enthusiastic participation from students, who engaged in meaningful discussions with the resource persons. Their questions and observations reflected a deep interest in the topics and a willingness to contribute towards societal well-being.
Speaking on the occasion, representatives of DLSA Srinagar emphasized that empowering youth through legal awareness is a crucial step towards building a just, inclusive, and resilient society. They reiterated the Authority’s commitment to conducting such programmes regularly, thereby enabling young citizens to recognize their rights, fulfill their responsibilities, and take an active stand against injustices.
