J&K Police Welcomes 915 New Constables for Enhanced Security, 365 to Serve in Kashmir Zone

Srinagar, Apr 01 : In a significant development aimed at bolstering security measures and addressing gender-based violence, Jammu and Kashmir Police has welcomed 915 women constables following the formation of two dedicated women battalions. These women constables will play a crucial role in various law enforcement activities, including anti-terrorism operations, across the region.

According to the news agency, the formation of women police battalions in Jammu and Kashmir was initiated to address the shortage of female personnel at various levels within the police force. Recognizing the importance of gender diversity and inclusivity in law enforcement, the Jammu and Kashmir government proposed the establishment of these battalions to the Union Home Ministry.

Subsequently, the proposal received approval during a meeting of the State Administrative Council (SAC) chaired by the then Governor, Satyapal Malik, in 2019. Following the requisite recruitment and training processes, a total of 915 women constables have now joined the police department.

Among these newly recruited constables, 550 will be deployed in various districts of the Jammu Zone under Mahila Battalion One, while 365 will serve in districts across the Kashmir Zone as part of Mahila Battalion Two.

Following their passing out parade, these women constables will report to their respective zones, where they will be deployed based on operational requirements as determined by zone authorities.

The establishment of these women battalions was approved by the Home Ministry in June 2018, with one battalion designated for each of the Jammu and Kashmir regions. The formation of these battalions represents a significant investment in enhancing security measures and promoting gender equality within the police force.

Reports inform that total expenditure incurred in the formation of these women battalions amounts to Rs 235.86 crore, with the central government contributing Rs 105.11 crore and the state government providing Rs 129.94 crore towards the initiative
