SRINAGAR, APRIL 11: Government Lal Ded (LD) Hospital, in collaboration with the Safe Motherhood Committee of FOGSI observed ‘National Safe Motherhood Day-2025’ with a series of awareness activities themed ‘Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures.’

The event highlighted the critical importance of accessible and high-quality maternal care from the preconception period through pregnancy and the postpartum phase.

The theme reflects the urgent need for inclusive maternal healthcare to ensure safe, healthy outcomes for mothers and their newborns.

Prof. (Dr.) Syed Masuma Rizvi, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology emphasized maternal rights as a cornerstone of public health. She called for increased investment in women’s health, stressing its vital role in sustainable development and the well-being of future generations.

Prof. Masuma further emphasized the importance of regular antenatal check-ups for early detection and management of complications, ensuring vaccinations such as influenza and tetanus for pregnant women, focusing on maternal nutrition, including adequate iron and calcium supplementation besides promoting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months to enhance newborn immunity and bonding.

Dr. Muzaffar Jan, Medical Superintendent of LD Hospital, spoke on the foundational pillars of safe motherhood, family planning, timely antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, emergency obstetric response, and comprehensive postnatal services. He also highlighted the significance of investigation and health screening prior to pregnancy to identify and manage risk factors early.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, consultants, the Deputy Medical Superintendent, CMOs, RMOs, nursing supervisors, healthcare professionals, students, and hospital staff—each reaffirming their shared commitment to maternal and child well-being.
