Nursing students in Jammu & Kashmir are encountering significant challenges that threaten their education and future careers. Among the primary issues are the lack of Indian Nursing Council (INC) recognition for many government and private nursing colleges, as well as fee disputes in private institutions. These issues not only hinder students’ academic pursuits but also reflect systemic deficiencies that need urgent attention.
The spokesperson of Jammu & Kashmir Students Movement Shahid ul islam trying to put this serious matter before the Nursing Council & want to make a review of these challenges.
Shahid said, Out of approximately 15 government nursing colleges in Jammu & Kashmir, only one is recognized by the Indian Nursing Council. This lack of recognition poses a serious problem for students, as an INC-approved degree is often a prerequisite for employment and further education in the field of nursing. Additionally, various private nursing colleges are not registered with the INC due to insufficient facilities and infrastructure.
The absence of INC recognition not only devalues the education provided by these institutions but also jeopardizes the future prospects of nursing graduates. Without the council’s approval, graduates may face difficulties in securing jobs or pursuing higher studies, limiting their professional growth and contribution to the healthcare sector.
Another pressing concern for nursing students in Jammu & Kashmir is the fee structure in private nursing colleges. While the University of Kashmir issued a fee structure for private nursing colleges last year, several institutions are refusing to comply with it. This refusal puts students in a difficult position, as they are forced to either pay higher fees or risk losing their academic progress.
The high cost of education in private nursing colleges further exacerbates the financial burden on students, many of whom come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This issue not only affects individual students but also contributes to the broader problem of inequitable access to quality education
In light of these challenges, The spokesperson of J&KSM Shahid Ul Islam demands an urgent need for action to address the issues faced by nursing students in Jammu & Kashmir. The government, regulatory bodies, and educational institutions must work together to find solutions that prioritize students’ interests and ensure their right to a quality education. Efforts should be made to expedite the recognition process for government and private nursing colleges by the Indian Nursing Council. This includes providing necessary infrastructure and facilities to meet the council’s standards.
Shahid said,Private nursing colleges should be mandated to adhere to the fee structure issued by the University of Kashmir. Strict enforcement mechanisms should be put in place to ensure compliance and protect students from arbitrary fee hikes.
Financial support should be provided to students from low-income backgrounds to help them meet the costs of education. Scholarships, grants, and other forms of assistance can make education more accessible and equitable.
The spokesperson of J&KSM Shahid wants this matter of nursing students in Jammu & Kashmir demand for immediate attention and action. By addressing issues related to INC recognition and fee regulation, stakeholders can ensure that nursing students receive the education and support they need to thrive in their chosen field. It is time to prioritize the well-being and future of nursing students, who play a vital role in the healthcare system of Jammu & Kashmir.
