Stop Putin—- And Save Planet

The Russia-Ukraine war despite endless dialogue between the two countries does not seem to be ending anytime soon even as the prolonged conflict not only endangers the commoners in Ukraine but also the people living across the globe. The immediate effect, apart from other effects, is the migration of the people to the nearby countries which not only disrupts the people migrating but also the places where the people migrating reach. Also, who would have thought of a direct war between any two countries in the 21st century where the redrawing of borders is not only impossible but unimaginable?

But that happened, people were seen dying—which continues to far, with people losing their homes, migrating to different countries in huge numbers because as per figures, due to the refugee crisis that began in Europe in late February 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, over 4.1 million refugees have left Ukraine, while an estimated 6.5 million people have been displaced within the country.

While all this is happening, how could one not think of a possible nuclear attack by Russia on Ukraine—which now seems quite possible keeping in view the track record of Russia with regard to Ukraine? The international covenant, laws and resolution stand decimated by Russia and while the world looks on, Russia might end up putting the entire planet at risk, by carrying out the unimaginable.

The time is right for the world powers to go beyond mere sanctions which were imposed by the world powers as an indirect punishment to Russia for what it did in Ukraine, no matter the sanctions do have an impact, but that is in a long run, immediately, it might not affect Russia which stood as a big energy exporter to the most of the world even though the dependent countries are now trying to explore the new options.

The time has come for the world to stop Putin right now and there. He cannot be allowed to play it all his way as Russia continues to wreak havoc across Ukraine and even the schools, as well as hospitals, have been destroyed in the Russian strikes. The world needs to understand that if the head of a country turns out to be a monster, then the world should expect nothing but destruction.

It is this transformation that can push Russia to go ahead with the nuclear attack on Ukraine and that will not only end up devastating Ukraine, rather the effects are going to be far-reaching and long-lasting. Though the world powers are acting directly or indirectly as of now; even as some have preferred to remain silent, there is a need for standing up to prevent something more devastating from happening.
