Srinagar, Apr 05, : In response to the prevailing security situation in the Union Territory of Ladakh, particularly in District Leh, authorities have decided to temporarily reduce mobile data services. The decision comes following inputs from the Superintendent of Police, District Leh, and other intelligence agencies, expressing concerns over the potential misuse of mobile data services by anti-social elements.

Dr. Shiv Darshan Singh, IPS, Additional Director General of Police and Head of Police, U.T Ladakh, has authorized the reduction in mobile data speed, exercising powers vested under Sub rule (1) of Rule 2 of Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rule 2017. The move aims to mitigate the risk of incitement or provocation through social media platforms, which could potentially disrupt public peace and law & order in the region.

Effective immediately, mobile data services, including 3G, 4G, 5G, and Public Wi-Fi facilities for 5G, will be scaled down to 2G in Leh city (Latitude 34.149722 and longitude 77.575). The reduction in internet speed will remain in effect from 1800 Hrs on 06-04-2024 to 1800 Hrs on 07.04.2024, reads an order a copy of which is in possession of Srinagar based news agency. This temporary measure is intended to ensure the maintenance of public peace and security in the Union Territory of Ladakh during this period of heightened security concerns, the order added,.
