Srinagar, Dec 07 : A young woman from Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has been earning her livelihood through the attractive handmade Zari work.

Afroza Jan (26) a resident of Chakpora in Sehpora hamlet of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has recently received an award from the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for her Zari work during  the recent World Craft Council (WCC) event in Srinagar.

Speaking to the news agency, Afroza said that she is associated with Zari work for the last nine years from 2015.

“I have learned this art from one of my relatives and started to work at home, which is giving me good returns,” she said.

She claimed that she is the only woman in her village who knows this work but many young girls are interested in it, adding that she is planning to start a unit with the government support where she can train local women so that they too can earn their livelihood amidst the rise in unemployment.

Afroza said that she is thankful to the Handicrafts department for its support through her journey. “There are hundreds of women in rural areas, who are dependent on their family for everything but they must take benefit of the government schemes to become financially independent,” she said
