India was pleased with itself when the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships—2023, which took place in New Delhi from March 15 to 26, saw Indian boxers win four gold medals, the most out of the 65 competing nations. Six boxers from India competed in the competition, including Saweety Boora, Nitu Ghanghas, Nikhat Zareen, and Lovlina Borgohain, who all won gold medals in their respective weight divisions. Their success would have a long-lasting effect on the Indian boxing industry and give the nation’s boxing community a big morale boost, which will inspire more youngsters to pursue boxing as a career.

Nitu Ghanghas, a native of Haryana, took home the gold in the 51kg weight division. Her triumph served as motivation for the nation’s up-and-coming female fighters. Telangana native Nikhat Zareen took home the gold in the 54 kg weight division. India achieved a first-ever gold medal in this weight category with this victory, making it a historic victory for the country. The Assamese athlete Lovlina Borgohain took home the gold in the 69kg weight class. In the 81kg weight class, Saweety Boora of Haryana won the gold medal.

Indian boxers’ performance at the Women’s World Boxing Championships was a huge achievement for the country and a source of national pride. Many young boxers from throughout the nation have been motivated by this success to pursue their goal of becoming professional boxers. Additionally, it must now prompt the Government to increase its financial support for the growth of boxing in the nation.

It is crucial to keep in mind, though, that many states, including the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, are still far behind in terms of offering the facilities required for aspiring boxers. Sports are important for young people’s physical and mental development; hence the government must create the best facilities easily accessible for them in the UT. They should have access to the greatest tools, instruction, and direction so they can follow their aspirations of becoming accomplished boxers.

No one can discount or ignore the sporting prowess of the young people in J&K, who are showcasing their skills in a variety of different sports, but there hasn’t been much focus on boxing; this needs to change if we want to see these athletes reach the pinnacles of achievement. The youngsters from Kashmir are making inroads in the Indian Premier League while one from Shopian, Jasia Akhtar is already playing for Delhi Capital in the maiden Women’s IPL.

The Government has a responsibility to guarantee that the youngsters have the best resources available to pursue their aspirations in the sports, especially boxing. The UT administration should be especially motivated by the accomplishments of Indian boxers at the Women’s World Boxing Championships to increase funding for athletics and build top-notch facilities for the athletes because they are deserving of it all. It is the duty of the Government to guarantee that our young boxers have access to the greatest facilities. Why not seize this opportunity to change things?
