Ganderbal, Dec 02 : After years of delays, the much-awaited Akhal Kangan bridge in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district is all set to open for vehicular movement within the next week.
The announcement was made by Mian Mehar Ali, the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Kangan, who expressed his enthusiasm over the completion of the bridge, which is expected to improve connectivity between Kangan and several neighboring villages.
The Akhal Kangan Bridge project, which began in 2010, faced numerous setbacks over the years, including missed deadlines and long periods of inactivity. Despite these challenges, the bridge’s completion marks a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development.
In addition to the opening of the bridge, MLA Mehar Ali revealed that a new road connecting Kangan Market to Akhal Bridge via the R&B Guest House has also been sanctioned.
The road, approved by the higher authorities of the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, is expected to significantly improve travel time for residents of Akhal, Najwan, Kunmal, and surrounding areas.
“This development is a testament to our commitment to enhancing the region’s infrastructure and fulfilling promises made during the election campaign,” said MLA Mian Mehar Ali. “It is better late than never, and I am grateful to all the officials who supported this important project.”
The opening of Akhal Kangan Bridge has been eagerly anticipated by locals who have faced significant hardships due to limited access to Kangan and other key areas.
Many residents expressed their gratitude for the bridge’s completion and the sanctioning of the new road, which will improve transportation and ease daily travel.
“This bridge will end years of inconvenience for us. We have been waiting for better access for a long time, and we are very grateful to MLA Kangan and the government for making this happen,” said a local resident.
A trial run of the bridge was conducted today with two loaded tippers, testing the bridge’s durability and strength. The trial was successful, further reassuring residents about the bridge’s safety and reliability.
One of the drivers said, “We have waited for 15 years for this moment, and today, we can finally see it completed. It’s a day of joy for all the residents of Akhal and surrounding areas.”
The completion of the Akhal Kangan Bridge, along with the newly sanctioned road, is expected to boost economic activity, enhance transportation, and significantly improve the quality of life for thousands of residents in the region.
