Corruption by Principal: Next Generation is Not in Good Hands!

It is a sad disgrace that teachers are now complicit in corruption by accepting bribes that are demanded. The Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has busted the Principal of the Government Degree College (GDC), Pattan in north Kashmir for taking a bribe of Rs 60,000. A second professor who is also from North Kashmir was detained for his role. What has come to the fore must ring a bell and should tell us that a lot lies in the dark underbellies which we are scared to look into and as a society, have we reached to a point where the people belonging to the noble profession of teaching, are also getting involved in the dirt of corruption.

It is nothing more than a stain, damaging the reputation of the field intended to show the next generation a way that is based on uprightness and honesty. Teachers are meant to be the cornerstones of society, passing on knowledge and education to the next generation. They are meant to serve as positive role models for the pupils, showing them what it is to work hard and be trustworthy. Accepting bribes is a grave betrayal of trust, particularly when it comes to educators. They must serve as role models for younger students and teach moral principles in them as educators. It sends a message to students that such behavior is normal and muddles the lines between right and evil when teachers are discovered accepting bribes. But, when teachers are exposed for accepting bribes, it exposes the dire situation and makes it obvious that the next generation is not in good hands.

Although we are not generalizing, the way things are going shows that there is a general lack of concern for ethical behaviour in the teaching profession. It is regrettable that some educators are prepared to renege on their principles in order to make a fast buck. Also, it’s possible that there are more of these events than are being reported. Investigating potential causes that might be “compelling” people in the teaching profession to engage in such malpractices is necessary to address the severe concern raised by the situation. The authorities should also take strict disciplinary action against anyone caught accepting bribes and ensure that teachers are held accountable for their actions because when we see teachers involved in such crimes, it is imperative to address the root of the issue, make any necessary corrections, and punish those responsible.

Additionally, steps should be taken to ensure that teachers are better paid—while excluding the Principal, who would undoubtedly receive a fat monthly salary—and that their work is properly valued, as this will help to ensure that they do not engage in unethical practices, especially the lower-ranking teachers who are ambitious enough. It is crucial to treat this problem holistically, which involves creating a system of prevention, holding educators accountable, and encouraging an integrity-based culture. Only then can we guarantee that bribery and other unethical acts won’t be practiced in our educational institutions. We cannot allow our teachers to accept bribes. Not acceptable at all!
