DLSA Budgam conducts Awareness Programme on Legal Righs of inmates

BUDGAM, MARCH 27: As part of its calendar of activities, the District Legal Services Authority, Budgam (DLSA Budgam), under the aegis of the J&K Legal Services Authority and under the chairmanship of O. P. Bhagat, Chairman DLSA (Principal District & Sessions Judge), Budgam, successfully conducted an awareness programme at Central Jail Srinagar on Premature Release of inmates , Parole and Furlough, Identification of Under Trial Prisoners for UTRC, and Quarterly Inspection of Prison Legal Aid Clinic.

The programme was organized with the objective of creating awareness among inmates regarding their legal rights and the various provisions available to them under the law, particularly those related to premature release, parole, furlough, and the functioning of the Under Trial Review Committee (UTRC).

Secretary, DLSA Budgam, Tabassum Qadir Parray, along with Lateef Ahmad Khan, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel (LADC), Budgam, highlighted the importance of legal awareness among inmates and emphasized the role of legal aid institutions in safeguarding the rights of prisoners.

During the session, the speakers elaborated on the eligibility criteria and procedures governing premature release, parole, and furlough. They also sensitized the participants about the identification of eligible under trial prisoners for consideration by the UTRC, with a focus on ensuring speedy justice and reducing overcrowding in prisons.

The role and functioning of Prison Legal Aid Clinics were also explained in detail, highlighting their significance in providing free legal assistance to inmates.

The programme witnessed active participation from jail authorities and inmates, who raised queries and interacted with the resource persons. The initiative was widely appreciated for empowering inmates with legal knowledge and promoting access to justice.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and a commitment to continue such awareness initiatives in future.
