Tale of Choked City: Srinagar!

The city is choked. Srinagar residents are no strangers to traffic bottlenecks and the congestion that they cause. With the Smart City Project currently underway in major regions of the city, the authorities have failed to implement a contingency plan to relieve traffic flow and make city roadways hassle-free; as a result, frequent traffic jams have become a nightmare for residents and visitors alike. The problem of traffic congestion is not new to the city—the essential remedies were previously absent and continue to be absent on the ground, but with the current construction projects, traffic difficulties have worsened. The authorities cannot deny that they underestimated the additional strain that the construction work would place on already congested city roads.
Traffic jams are generating delays in getting to destinations and are becoming a daily occurrence due to poor planning, ineffective traffic management, and the mayhem they are causing on the roadways. Employees and, most critically, patients trying to find a way to the hospitals are seen trapped in the middle while trying to reach their respective hospitals as well as students trying desperately to get to their respective schools. Ambulances can occasionally be seen snarled in frustrating traffic jams all around the city; these scenes of adversity show the utter failure of the authorities on the ground.

It is past time for the authorities to take action to ease the city’s traffic congestion. Even though we are aware that the ongoing construction will make every plan fail, the authorities still need to address the problem of traffic mismanagement throughout the city because getting around the city is getting harder and harder with each passing day. Immediate action is required and cannot be put off any longer. Even while there are several solutions that the authorities can implement in the long run, especially once the construction projects at important city locations are completed, the city’s residents must receive immediate respite.

There are also other areas that require the development of more effective and sustainable traffic management systems, such as better traffic light systems and enhanced road infrastructure. Furthermore, the authorities should investigate the idea of adding more parking facilities around the city—rather than just in one area—which assist would reduce the number of vehicles parked on the roadways and therefore minimize traffic congestion.  It is the responsibility of the authorities to ensure that the citizens of the city do not suffer as a result of traffic jams, and given the failure of the concerned departments, there is an urgent need for the courts to intervene so that those in charge are pulled up and pushed to act. A comprehensive plan to improve and simplify traffic flow in the city is urgently needed.
