Srinagar: Two minor siblings were injured after thieves entered into their house and attacked them with a sharp edged weapon at Moominabad area of Batamaloo in Srinagar on Friday afternoon. However, both the accused involved in the incident have been arrested by police.
The family said that two thieves barged into their house in the afternoon during the Friday congregational prayers.
“Two persons barged into our house when our father left for Masjid to offer Friday prayers. They thrashed us to the pulp and even threatened to kill us,” a minor girl, who was attacked by the duo, said.
She said that they (Thieves) asked them for money and that they will leave but let them know where their family has kept the money. “The duo kept the knife at our throat. They tied us with the rope,” she said.
As soon as she cried for help, one of the accused managed to flee the house while another was arrested on the spot by the police.
Police in a statement issued to KNO said that two accused persons involved in trespassing into a residential house and attacking and injuring two female inmates have been arrested.
“Acting swiftly on information about the incident of trespassing in Momin Abad Batamaloo, Police arrested one accused person on the spot, identified as Umar Yousuf Wani, son of Mohammad Yousuf of Firdous Abad Batamaloo while as the other accused had managed to escape from the spot.”
“However, after strenuous efforts, the other accused person has also been arrested within the shortest possible time. He has been identified as Habil Yaseen, son of Mohammad Yaseen of Dal Colony, Bemina.”
Police said that preliminary investigation revealed that the accused persons had trespassed into the residential house with the intention to commit theft and attacked two female inmates resulting in injuries to the both of them. “However, the hue and cry raised by the females attracted the locals who played a commendable role in overpowering one of the accused on spot while informing police about the incident.”
In this regard, police said that a case under FIR number 19/2022 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Batamaloo and further investigation is in progress.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Rakesh Balwal appreciated the role played by the community members in nabbing the accused and assured that police is resolved to act tough against the criminals involved in crime against women.
Balwal termed the incident as shocking, saying that “I cannot even imagine that such kind of episode can take place. Community cooperation is a must and we will ensure that strict action is taken against the persons involved in the act.”
A case under strict and relevant sections of the law has been registered in this regard, he said.
Meanwhile, he appealed to people to come forward with any information regarding anti-social elements in their neighbourhood. “Persons found indulging in anti-social activities will be strictly dealt as per law,” he said.
