Lucknow, Aug 24: Newly appointed President of Uttar Pradesh Pradeshik Congress Committee (UPPCC) Ajai Rai assumed charge at the party office here on Thursday.

On his arrival from Varanasi, Rai was accorded a warm welcome by the party workers at the state headquarters.

Appealing to the workers to work together to strengthen the party organisation, he said, “I assure everyone that on the basis of the strength of Congress workers of UP and your cooperation, I will give you success in the 2024 Lok Sabha poll. We will fight for the people against the oppressive state government.”

The UPPCC Chief said, “I assure the central leadership that Ajay Rai will not back down even if he has to sacrifice his life for the workers.

Now the Congress workers have made up their mind that Rahul Gandhi should become the Prime Minister of the country. UP has the biggest responsibility in making Rahul Gandhi the PM. We will show our strength in 2024.”

It may be noted that in a revamp, Congress appointed former MLA Ajay Rai as the new chief of UP unit replacing former MP Brijlal Khabari on August 17.

Rai, who hails from a Bhumihar family, is considered to be a strongman of Purvanchal region of the state.

A five-time MLA, Rai unsuccessfully contested Lok Sabha election against Prime Minister Narendra Modi twice, first in 2014 and then again in 2019.

He started his political career with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), joined Congress in 2012 and won the assembly election in the same year.
